Kathmandu: The Nepalese government has taken a decisive step to shut down the popular social media platform TikTok in the country, citing concerns over its impact on social harmony. The decision was announced following a Cabinet meeting held at the residence of Prime Minister at Baluwatar.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, who also serves as the government's spokesperson, clarified that TikTok's influence was deemed to be contributing to the deterioration of family structures and social relations. "TikTok is constantly spreading propaganda that disrupts our family structure and social relations. We have decided to stop TikTok for the time being to control this," she stated.

The Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to handle the technical aspects of the shutdown. "The decision to close TikTok has been made today. The related people are working on the technical parts of it. The Communication Ministry and the Nepal Telecommunication Authority have already started preparations for this. Probably, the decision will be implemented from today," Minister Sharma added.

The move reflects the government's concern about the potential negative impact of social media on societal harmony and values. The decision to shut down TikTok is seen as a measure to address these concerns and maintain social cohesion.
